Performing Artist

Sonya has worked in film, television and theatre since making her screen debut in Ocean Girl in the 1990s. Feature films include Wil, Knowing, My Year Without Sex and The Last Ride; television highlights are Rush, Very Small Business, East West 101, Lowdown, It’s A Date, Legally Brown and Romper Stomper, Next Generation. In 2012, she founded Watch This, producing and performing Assassins (2013/14), Pacific Overtures (2014), Company (2015/16), Merrily We Roll Along (2017) and A Little Night Music (2018) to critical acclaim and a total of 12 Green Room nominations. Sonya was a founding director of Poppy Seed Festival and in 2015 and 2016 performed Elbow Room’s We Get It at MTC Neon and Brisbane Powerhouse. In 2017, she performed Polyglot/ Papermoon Puppet Theatre’s Helpmann and GRA-nominated Cerita Anak (Child’s Story) and Melbourne Theatre Company’s premiere of Melbourne Talam (Green Room Award nomination, Best Ensemble). Last year, she reprised Cerita Anak (Child’s Story) in Perth, Adelaide and Indonesia and debuted Emilie Collyer’s ‘netball fantasia’ Contest to rave reviews. In 2019, she will be performing Fleur Kilpatrick’s, Whale, recipient of the 2018 Max Afford award and co-directing Sunday in the Park with George with Watch This.
