Steph is a mid-career, Melbourne-based artist with over 20 years of experience. Steph’s multi-arts sound-based practice includes: contemporary music, sound design for performance and interactive/ participatory art, along with web/audio design and creative coding. Steph is founding member of The Blue Grassy Knoll, writing and performing live film scores to Buster Keaton films, a member of The Letter String Quartet and Polyglot Theatre’s ‘Generator’. Steph’s recent sound design features in the permanent exhibition at Melbourne Museum’s Pauline Gandel Children’s Gallery and he continues to develop and release his own independent iOS music software.
With a degree in Arts from LaTrobe University (1994), majoring in composition and computer music, Steph has pursued his passion for music and technology throughout his professional career, working across most aspects of contemporary performance.
As a performer, sound designer and composer, Steph has extensive experience creating work for young audiences. In addition to Camo Disco for Melbourne Museum, his sound designs and compositions include: Polyglot Theatre’s: Cerita Anak (Child’s Story) (Helpmann Nomination), Ants, Paper Planet, Separation Street (Green Room Award), Tangle and Drawbridge; and, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus’: The Promise (Helpmann Award), Pirates, Crunch, Circus Under My Bed.
As an interactive installation and software developer, Steph explores new and exciting technology platforms and has built applications for web, theatre, music, games and real-time performance. Recent work includes: m-ball, Between the Trees, Polyglot’s Voice Lab, Fly By Night (Green Room nomination - Digital App Design), Dinahmoe Labs, 2Breathe and WeMakeApps.
Steph has also worked in multiple roles with Chambermade Opera, National Institute of Circus Arts, Ilbijerri Theatre, Snuff Puppets, Lemony S and Peepshow Inc.
Steph’s music software includes bip and synthmate and is used by artists all over the world.
